Clinical Observation of Typhoid Fever


Abstract
227 cases of typhoid fever, admitted to the dept. mad. since July, 1974 to June, 1978, were analysed clinically with the following results.
1. The peak age incidence was in the age of 15-29, seasonal prevalence was in summer months(July-October) but no sexual difference.
2. Fever(94. 3%), abdominal pain(50. 2%), diarrhea(45%) and hepatosplenomegaly(10. 6 %) were the main symptoms and signs.
3. Leukopenia was presented in 36.7% and relative lymphocytosis was in 69%.
4. In 74. 2% of 132 cases revealed anti-O titer over 1:160 in Widal test.
5. Bacteriological studies showed positive blood culture in 18. 6% of cases, stool culture
in 16.4% and urine culture in 6.4%.
6. Significant elevation of serum GOT were 36.9%, serum GPT 15.2% and alkaline phosphatase 15.7% in liver function test.
7. Complications were observed in 32. 6% of total cases, which were intestinal bleeding, intestinal perforation, cholecystitis etc.
8. 95.1% of total cases were discharged with improvement, 7 cases recurred and 4 cases expired with the mortality rate of 1.7%.
